Making a difference in the lives of people living with rare diseases
Rare Disease Day is an annual observance dedicated to raising awareness about rare diseases and the challenges faced by those affected by them. Rare diseases are defined as those that affect a small number of people compared with other prevalent diseases in the population. There are over 7,000 identified rare diseases in the world, with new ones being discovered each year.
Types of rare diseases
There are many types of rare diseases. One way of categorizing them is according to their cause. Based on this there are four broad divisions:
- Rare diseases caused by genetic mutations: Many rare diseases are caused by mutations in specific genes. These mutations can affect the structure or function of proteins, leading to a wide range of health problems.
- Rare infectious diseases: Some infectious diseases are rare because they are caused by bacteria, viruses, or other pathogens that are not commonly found in the environment or are difficult to detect.
- Rare autoimmune diseases: Autoimmune diseases occur when the immune system attacks healthy cells and tissues in the body. Some autoimmune diseases are rare and can affect multiple organs and systems.
- Rare cancers: Although cancer is a common disease, some types of cancer are rare because they affect a small number of people or occur in rare locations in the body.
